Abstract

Among the five adjacent gallery graves excavated at Val-de-Reuil and "Portejoie" (western Normandy, France), some display a multi-access system whose precise purpose is unclear. The study of these systems, which may be axial, lateral, and terminal on the same grave, and of their relationship with the monuments' architecture, is only possible if we also take into consideration the many changes that occurred in their use, as regards both mortuary and cultural practices. The point of view of this study is not to assign a monument to a fixed category or mode of operation, but rather to try to understand the historical background and the actions governing its evolution.
