Abstract

It has been growing within the Portuguese population the implementation of initiatives that encourage long life learning. Not only more emphasis has been given to the importance of developing opportunities for adults to expand their knowledge, but also it has been increasing the assumption that there is continuity between learning and experience making it pertinent to recognize and validate those experiences and competences through a process of Recognition, Validation and Certification of Competences. Some studies suggest that from this process rise personal benefits for the adults, in this context, and based on the experience of the Centre Rumo aos Saberes put into practice by Cercipeniche, the authors considered relevant to investigate the possible association between the process of Recognition, Validation and Certification of Competences and the self-esteem of the adults. With a sample of 38 adults and based on a quantitative methodology, one was able to find a positive impact in adult's self-esteem. This enhancement was most visible on the moment when the competencies of the adults were validated and certified by the Jury of Validation.
