Abstract

This essay deals with the merging process of the rhythm called ijexá, originated from the religious practices of Candomblé, as a genre of popular music in Brazil. The focus is placed on the historical and ethnographic viewpoint; and it reflects on the dynamics of musical and cultural transculturation processes involving communities of African-Brazilians, pointing out some possible interpretations of the phenomenon
