Abstract
This paper discusses the austerity policies in Portugal in the context of «crisis», critically analysing the discourse produced and spread around them as «unquestionable truths». Based on an activist experience of building a newspaper theatre piece «Exchange Salazar by Troika», developed by the Group of Theatre of the Oppressed (NTO) of Braga in 2012, as part of the celebrations of April 25 and other social mobilization against austerity. Involving the collection and analysis of political speeches,news and data from a focus group discussion, the results show parallels between the current discourse of austerity and the one which has informed salazarism. In line with a socially and politically committed research, the article stresses the importance of newspaper‑theatre as a tool for collective action and critical education, setting out other forms of social participation, civic and political.
