Abstract

In 2018 and 2019 were published the results for the 14 museums participating in the National Museum Audiences Survey, a pioneering study promoted by the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage, the entity responsible for museum policies in Portugal. This article provides the theoretical and methodological framework ofthe study, identifies the most influential theoretical approaches, the components and dimensions of the extensive survey, including a qualitative dimension on the collection and analysis of opinions and suggestions, the methods and the arrangements of field work. It is suggested that the study should continue and that the objects and methods of analysis should be diversified.
