Abstract

The charismatic movement poses a challenge to all churches, including the Lutheran churches. It is a symptom of the effervescent modem religiosity. Is it a sign of renewal or a factor of division? Once again the churches are faced with the task of discerning the spirits. The New Testament offers several criteria for that. It does not belittle phenomena that are common in the world of religions, such as speaking in tongues. But it puts them at the service of the community/ congregation. The Lutheran church is committed to this view and understands itself too as a pentecostal church. Precisely for this reason it has to be a critical element in the world of spirits.
