Abstract
This article analyses the debates in the press of the South of Minas about slave work, abolitionism and free work, occurred in decades of 1870 and 1880. Are privileged the newspapers that circulated in the most detached cities of the region – Campanha, Pouso Alegre and Itajuba – with different politic and ideologic orientations. The intend is examine the visions of the slavery problem presents in the region and the local newspapers’ propositions delineated for his solution, indicating the similarities and diferences between they and the directives taken by the neighbor province of Sao Paulo.

Resumo: Este trabalho analisa os debates na imprensa do Sul de Minas sobre trabalho escravo, abolicionismo e trabalho livre, ocorridos nas décadas de 1870 e 1880. Privilegiam-se periódicos que circularam nos centros urbanos mais destacados da região – Campanha, Pouso Alegre e Itajubá –, de diferentes orientações político-ideológicas. A intenção é examinar as visões do problema da escravidão presentes na região e as propostas que os periódicos locais delinearam para sua solução, apontando as semelhanças e diferenças entre elas e os encaminhamentos tomados na vizinha província de São Paulo.
