Abstract

The performance of the public media contributes to strengthen democracies in several western countries, even exploring media literacy and media education activities in Latin America. Thus, this article aims to analyze the experience of BBC News Brazil with the “Oficina de Leitura Crítica de Notícias” in view of the possible contributions to media education in Latin America and, more specifically, in Brazil. The methodology comprises a case study and an opinion survey carried out with fifty-one respondents, which allowed understanding the perceptions on the subject, and the interest of students and professionals related to the field of Communications. The results suggest that 58.8% claim to have already had contact with a media literacy project or activity, and 98% believe that activities such as the “Oficina de Leitura Crítica de Notícias” are interesting for the country.
