The main purpose of this paper is to make evident that many lexical items of the portuguese language cannot be seen as exceptions to the pretonic mid vowels raising rules as they have been considered, and that lexical diffusion is not lexical analogy.

5 Em outras circunstâncias, Kato (1999: 204) afirma que: “Toda inovação gramatical se dá no nível da FALA 1.” Minha argumentação aqui é que essa inovação é implementada inicialmente por meio dos itens lexicais mais familiares (os adquiridos) e, provavelmente, dentre esses atinge os mais freqüentes primeiro em mudanças como o alçamento, conforme Bybee (2001)
Summary
The main purpose of this paper is to make evident that many lexical items of the portuguese language cannot be seen as exceptions to the pretonic mid vowels raising rules as they have been considered, and that lexical diffusion is not lexical analogy. É interessante notarmos que temos itens, com o primeiro registro nos séculos XIII a XVII, que possuem ambiente para o alçamento (perdiz, cerviz, crepúsculo, Netuno, etc.) e que não foram registrados alçados, enquanto outros, nessas condições descritas, foram registrados alçados (cimitério, midida, ninhum, etc.), mostrando-nos a atuação lexical.
