Abstract

Recent evidence from a pilot trial in 100 patients suggests that a continuous, 24 hour infusion of sodium bicarbonate, started preoperatively on the day of surgery, reduces the incidence of cardiac-surgery-associated acute kidney injury (CSA-AKI) [1]. The present cohort study aims to determine the kidney protective effects of this intervention in a larger and heterogeneous population during routine practice.
