Abstract

O 2(a 1Δ g) has been observed and monitored by kinetic absorption spectroscopy in the vacuum ultra-violet following the flash photolysis of ozone at room temperature. The kinetics demonstrate that a number of diffuse bands, tentatively attributed hitherto to absorption from this excited singlet state, may be definitely so assigned. An approximate value for the rate constant for the reaction O 2(a 1Δ g) −O 3 → 20 2 · O is obtained and it is demonstrated that this system may be employed for detailed kinetic studies of O 2(a 1Δ g).
