Abstract

Introduction: Brachytherapy uses encapsulated radioactive sources to deliver a high dose to cancerous cells during radiotherapy. Thus, end-user calibration of brachytherapy sources is necessary, not only to check vendor stated calibration but also to ensure traceability to internationally accepted standards. The NMISA is introducing a new service: traceability for the quantity Reference Air Kerma Rate (RAKR) for HDR Ir-192 and Co-60 sources, used by the radiotherapy community in brachytherapy.
