Abstract

AbstractFeeding tests with chicks showed a marked loss in nutritive value when 7–12 year‐old samples were fed as sole protein source. When fed as supplements to other proteins age seemed to be of little importance. The inferiority of some samples as a sole protein source, apparently due to age, was shown to be accompanied by decrease in available lysine, although lysine was not the most limiting amino‐acid: pepsin–hydrochloric acid‐soluble‐N or free fatty acids values gave no useful information. Except that addition of herring oil to a fat‐extracted sample proved harmful during many years storage, the keeping qualities could not be related to raw material or processing, nor could any long‐term effect of BHT be found.
