Abstract

Four alfalfa leaf protein concentrates (Pro-Xan) were evaluated in two metabolizable energy (M.E.) trials and one broiler chick feeding trial. Extensive nutrient composition data for the Pro-Xans are presented. The protein content and nitrogen corrected M.E. values, determined for the Pro-Xans, on a dry matter basis, ranged from 51 to 68% and 2577 to 3182 kcal./kg., respectively. One of the Pro-Xans, prepared under commercial conditions, contained 62.8% protein and 2876 kcal. M.E. per kg. For the broiler chick feeding trial, this Pro-Xan was included at levels of 0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0% in chick diets of three different M.E. levels. At each dietary M.E. level, the experimental diets were maintained isocaloric and isonitrogenous. Analysis of variance showed there was no significant effect (P=.05) of Pro-Xan dietary level on chick weight gain or feed efficiency.
