Abstract

Atopic diseases are the most common chronic diseases in childhood and persist into adulthood.1 Worldwide more than 250 million suffer from asthma. The prevalence of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis is still increasing in the general population, and although there are geographical differences, the prevalence of atopic dermatitis is up to 20%.2-4 Although anti-inflammatory medications remain a cornerstone in the treatment of atopic diseases, mounting evidence suggests that a Mediterranean diet containing high levels of antioxidants and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids seems to play a role for both the development and prognosis of atopic diseases.
