Abstract

The oral cavity forms the entry to the alimentary tract but certain conditions may severely handicap or preclude this role. In such circumstances the Oral Surgeon as part of his basic skills should be able to institute alternative portals of nutritional support. Intravenous or other enteral routes can adequately overcome such problems. This paper examines the techniques available, feeding regimes and complications associated with the different methods.
