Abstract
Fusarium udum, the pathogen causing pigeon pea wilt, grows best in Richard’s medium at pH 6·0 when incubated for 21 days. Among the twenty-two carbon sources tried at 5% level, glycerol was found to be the best for growth of the fungus and lactic acid for sporulation. The initial absence of growth of the fungus in fructose medium and subsequent growth on prolonged incubation and the influence of glucose in normal growth and sporulation suggest the formation of adaptive enzyme(s). Additional evidence for the importance of organic acids in the utilization of inorganic ammonium nitrogen is given. The effect of pH on the utilization of nitrite nitrogen is discussed.
