Abstract

The effect of two environmental factors, temperature and hydrogen-ion concentration on the growth and sporulation ofAbsidia orchidis (Vuillemin)Hagem,Absidia sp.,Actinomucor elegans (Eidam)Benjamin &Hesseltine,Cunninghamella bertholletiaeStadel,Chaetocladium hesseltiniiMehrotra &Sarbhoy andMortierella indicaMehrotra, was studied. All the six species showed no growth below 10° C. The optimum temperature for the growth ofActinomucor elegans, C. hesseltinii andM. indica was found to be 30° C, for two species ofAbsidia it was 27° C and forC. bertholletiae it was 35° C. There was no growth inAbsidia sp.,Chaetocladium hesseltinii andCunninghamella bertholletiae at 50° C and inA. elegans, Absidia orchidis andM. indica at 45° C. The best sporulation was seen in all the species between 25° C to 30° C.
