Abstract

Studies on obese children’s nutritional knowledge compared to that of their non obese counterparts have not been carried out so far. Therefore, we analyze the nutritional knowledge of 101 non obese and 173 obese children aged 8 to 15 years based on an evaluated nutritional knowledge questionnaire. This questionnaire consists of 22 questions concerning energy and fat content of foods, energy requirements and sweetened food. In multiple logistic regression, degree of overweight ( p = 0.384) and gender ( p = 0.284) demonstrates no significant correlation to nutritional knowledge while increasing age ( p = 0.027) and type of school ( p = 0.0001) correlates significantly with nutritional knowledge. Similar nutritional knowledge of obese and non obese children points to genesis of obesity in childhood not caused by lack of knowledge. Nutritional knowledge depends on age and type of school education. These findings should be considered in the prevention and treatment of obesity in childhood.
