Abstract

In 1982, second-instar tobacco budworm larvae, Heliothis virescens (F.), were fed leaves, bracts, and squares without bracts (buds) of each of four strains of cotton (‘ST213’, ‘DH121’, ‘RED’, and ‘DH66’) and bud parts (anthers, calyces, and petals) of ‘ST213’. Nutritional indices were measured. Relative growth rates (RGR) of larvae fed on buds of ‘DH121’ were reduced below those of larvae fed buds of the other strains, while RGR’s on leaves and bracts of the glanded strains (‘ST213’, ‘DH121’, and ‘RED’) were no different. Strains high in number of gossypol glands or cyanidin-3-β-glucoside level proved to be effective inhibitors of larval growth, while one high in tannin did not. Relative consumption rates and relative growth rates were highest on buds. Petals and calyces were nutritionally inferior to anthers.
