Abstract

A study was conducted to evaluate the feeding of green moringa (Moringa oleifera) leaves in growing Barbari goats under stall-feeding. Twenty-eight growing female Barbari goats (9 months age, 14.86±0.58 kg body weight) were fed ad libitum green moringa and supplemented with concentrate pellet (1.5% of body weight) for 90 days. The average daily dry matter intake was 490.86 g comprising 234.83 g green moringa and 256.03 g concentrate pellet. The average daily gain of goats was 54.26 g. The feed conversion ratio was 9.94. The average calculated cost per kg weight gain was Rs. 125.50. Blood metabolites viz., glucose, total protein, albumin, globulin, serum enzymes (aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase) and ruminal volatile fatty acids were within normal range. The study concluded that growing goats can be reared under intensive system on moringa leaves and concentrate for desirable growth and economic production.
