Abstract

Rationale: At admission/during Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) stay malnutrition in critically ill children may lead to fat-free mass (FFM) loss, increased length of PICU/hospital stay, poor clinical outcomes and costs. Optimum nutrition support of PICU admitted patients is of particular importance to minimize morbidities and growth retardation in this era. The aim of the present study was to investigate the nutritional adequacy of children with critical illnesses and probable differences in nutrition support of critically ill children with medical and surgical underlying diseases.
