Abstract

The objective of the project was to develop nutrition software, Ccase™, an acronym for Clinical Computer Aided Simulation Exercises. It was designed to help nursing students interpret case studies and make clinical nursing decisions. Developmental steps included defining the criteria for software selection, writing the nutrition unit, pilot-testing (by both nursing and nutrition faculty and nursing students), revision, implementation and continuing software evaluation. Over the past four years, Ccase has evolved into both framework and specialty applications allowing nursing faculty to develop instructional units related not only to nutrition but other specialties. The software, developed in SuperCard™, combines a networked ORACLE™ database of case histories and client records, a series of exercises, glossary, references and an evaluation component to assess student learning. Authoring tools support the creation of new specialty applications and also allow faculty access to student responses and evaluation scores. Over 200 junior and senior nursing students currently use three specialty units: Nutrition Assessment, Antenatal Nursing Care, and Adult Medical/Surgical Nursing. Despite occasional network problems, student comments on the software are generally positive. Applications currently under development are Nutrition during Pregnancy, Nutrition and NIDDM, Postpartum Nursing Care and Child Abuse. Ccase has proved a successful alternative teaching tool and current interest indicates unlimited potential.
