Abstract

Rapidly advancing technology in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) has enabled smaller and smaller babies to survive the neonatal period (1). These tiny babies pose complex nutrition issues for the medical team. The National Research Council recommends that dietitians should be involved in the care of hospitalized neonates (2,3). The Council specifically recommends that the staff of level III NICUs (which provide the highest, most specialized level of care) include a registered dietitian with either advanced pediatric training that includes clinical neonatal nutrition or clinical experience in the nutrition care of critically ill newborn infants. A dietitian with similar qualifications is recommended for level II centers, depending on the patient population in the unit. To our knowledge, the extent to which NICU directors have followed these recommendations has not been published.
