Abstract

In recent decades, major improvements in the oral health status of the general public have been observed in many parts of the world as is shown by the continuous decline in caries prevalence in children and adolescents. This is generally ascribed to better oral hygiene and use of fluoride toothpaste. Dr. Anne Nordblad, STAKES, National Research and Development Centre for Welfare and Health (SF) and Dr. Jos van den Heuvel, Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (NL), co-presidents of the FDI Public Health Section, chaired the symposium. Chief dental officers and key representatives of various fields of dentistry from all over the world attended the symposium. Four presentations were given to provide background information for the panel debate held at the end of the symposium. The speakers had been asked to include ‘provocative’ statements in their presentations to encourage discussion on current controversies in the field.
