Abstract
Food has a varied and powerful impact on our physical and mental health. There are some extra considerations for those taking part in sport, for example, with energy requirements going up and increased strain being put on the body. GPs and their teams should embrace patients who lead a physically active life, while giving due consideration to the type of activity being undertaken by patients, diet, other relevant lifestyle factors and any symptoms they may be experiencing. There are benefits in good nutrition for sport, not only for performance, but also to reduce the risk of illness and injury and to aid recovery from injury. The nutritional guidance for athletes is relevant to patients undertaking higher levels of recreational exercise or seeking to improve health and lifestyle.
