Abstract

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease which can affect multiple systems throughout the body, characterized by the formation and deposition of autoantibodies and immune complexes in vital organs. The goals of standard lupus treatment include the prevention of chronic organ damage and reduction of disease flares, and may include hydroxychloroquine, corticosteroids, and immunosuppressives. A number of botanical medicines or nutrients may have a role alongside conventional management of lupus. These include green tea extract, curcumin, Traditional Chinese Medicine herbal formulas, N-acetylcysteine, vitamin D, and fish oil. This article reviews the clinical evidence for these nutrient or herbal medicine-based interventions and discusses outcomes in people with lupus.
