Abstract

Although functional foods and nutraceuticals have been strong trends for product development, they remain fanciful terms in the US and yet something very specific in other countries. This book presents a comprehensive overview of the regulatory framework surrounding the positioning, labeling, and manufacturing of foods and supplements around the world within this category of products. The first couple of chapters have an international focus, and then the US is the focus for about half of the content in the rest of the book. It goes into the most depth on US requirements for different types of food and supplement products but also has several chapters devoted to Canada, the European Union, and Japan. Shorter chapters then give highlights to the regulatory environment for Australia, India, and Asian and African countries. The final chapters focus on kosher and halal requirements as well as distinctions for pet food and intellectual property issues.
