Abstract

COLOMBIA, SOUTH AMERICA, is alC most twice as large as the state of Texas. It has an estimated population of 11,000,000. In June 1950, the total professional nursing personnel registered in the Ministry of Hygiene consisted of 226 hospital and general nurses-the hospital nurse is distinguished from the general nurse by the fact that the general nurse has had public health experience in the basic course. There were, at that time, 146 students enrolled in the country's four schools of nursing. Only three of the schools are approved by the National Government-the National Red Cross School of Nursing, the University of Javeriana School of Nursing, and the National Higher School of Nursing. The last-mentioned, the NationalHigher School of Nursing, is the newest of the three. It opened in Bogota in March 1944 with a class of forty-three students.
