Abstract

The Canadian Apheresis Group (CAG) is a national volunteer organization of apheresis practitioners, which until 1992 consisted of primarily physician members. Seven years ago, Canadian nurses involved in apheresis approached CAG with a request for continuing education opportunities. As a result, nurses were invited to attend and participate in the annual CAG meeting. The nursing membership subsequently developed into a national body, registered with the Canadian Nurses Association, as the Canadian Association of Apheresis Nurses (CAAN). With a commitment to excellence, the CAAN believed that the development of National guidelines specific to the specialty of apheresis nursing would enhance patient and donor care, as well as lead to improved blood product utilization.
