Abstract
Objectives The aim of this systematic review is to identify the most effective interventions used by nurses in the relief/reduction of post-operative pain. Question What are the most effective nursing interventions in the management of surgical pain? Criteria for considering studies for this review Types of participants Adults (18 years and above) experiencing acute pain following surgery in acute care hospitals. Types of interventions Interventions related to management of post-operative pain by nurses. These include: • Administration of analgesia: including oral, IMI, PCA, Epidural; • Assessment and documentation of intensity of pain at regular intervals; • Protocols, clinical pathways or flow-sheet used in the management of pain; • Preoperative patient education; • Non-pharmacological interventions such as massage and relaxation. Types of outcome measures • Relief or reduction of post-operative pain of pain • Patient satisfaction • Length of hospital stay
