Abstract
As the frequency of placement of the percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy and percutaneous endoscopic jejunostomy tubes in patients who require nutritional support increases, it is imperative that nurses become familiar with the methods and how they impact on patient care. Nurses must be knowledgeable in this area so that patients are prepared correctly prior to the placement, the appropriate care is rendered after placement, and patients are well educated in catheter care. The success of the procedure depends on attention to detail in the placement and care of the tube. This article provides an overview of the care required in the placement of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy and jejunostomy tubes.
