Abstract
In 1991, the California Geriatric Education Center (GCEC)1 conducted a survey of nursing home medical directors in the state of California to answer three questions: What are the characteristics of nursing home medical directors? What are their practice patterns? Their educational needs? We found that most were male Caucasians with a mean age of 53. Most served a single facility. Communicating with primary care physicians and handling incident reports were among their routine activities. Motivating factors for becoming a medical director were largely altruistic. Educational interests included content in clinical geriatrics and skills related to medical direction.
