Abstract

In almost all countries, nurses represent the largest group of health-care professionals. They deliver an array of services ranging from health promotion to curative, rehabilitative, and end-of-life care. Nurses are widely recognized as an essential input in the provision of health services and a critical resource for achieving primary health-care and national and international health and development goals. This article offers an overview of professional nursing practice from an international perspective. It provides information on a wide variety of topics including generalist, specialist, and advanced nursing practice, the role of professional nursing organizations, and nurses' contribution to health services. It concludes with an overview of the main challenges facing the nursing profession today – the global shortage of nurses.
