Abstract

In the past, doctors have been overly criticized for exerting too much professional dominance in the health service. For example, it has been claimed that some doctors are too concerned about themselves and their status, rather than showing humanistic concern for their patients and the rest of the healthcare team, particularly nurses. Observers such as Ley and Spelman (1967) have exposed how poor doctors have been in terms of communication and in developing their relationships with patients and colleagues. It is no wonder that modernization of the health service has been geared to changing this situation.
