Abstract

The Government is determined to deliver the expectations of the electorate regarding improved access to effective first-point-of-contact health care. Rising expectations together with doctor shortages are forcing the reshaping of healthcare manpower, and previous ‘sacred cows’ of the roles of professional groups are being challenged. Against this background, nurses are increasingly delivering aspects of care management previously within the domain of doctors. At the heart of this lies the extension of prescribing rights.
