Abstract

Background: Chest tube is a device used for the treatment of several conditions that affect the pleural space (the space between the chest wall and the lungs). Nurses are responsible for caring for chest trauma patients that arrive the emergency department, where chest damage can be severe and the treatment is contingent upon the level of injury. Aim: To investigate nurses’ performance regarding the care of patients with chest drains according to their demographic variables. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out at the Suez Canal University Hospital in Ismalia city, Egypt on 70 nurses using two research tools. The first questionnaire assessed the nurses’ knowledge, while the second assessed the nurses’ practice. Results: Significant differences in the knowledge and practice scores regarding the care of chest drains were observed among the studied nurses according to their marital status on items related to patient assessment, chest drainage system assessment, the prevention of post-insertion complications, and total practice score (p = 0.004, 0.013, 0.004, 0.004, respectively). Conclusion: There is an obvious need for the implementation of multimedia educational program on nursing caring for patients with chest drains, with a focus on proper documentation and patient assessment.
