Abstract

Annual staff competencies typically review new, infrequently used, or skills with a high degree of difficulty utilized within a nursing unit. One skill frequently forgotten about is the mind and the ability to communicate openly and freely without prejudice with our patients. Personal opinions can unconsciously become part of our discourse on any day with any patient. Providing care to patients with chronic pain requires an open mind and a belief in the patient experience as they say it is. This session will review a registered nurse competency completed by a Midwest hospital pain clinic examining nurses’ personal opinions about their provision of care to patients. Key words, articles used to stimulate discussion, and their stories will demonstrate how important the nurse's personal view can be when providing patient care.
