Abstract

In April 2017, amid the opioid crisis, nurse practitioners (NPs) in Ontario, Canada, obtained legislative authority to prescribe controlled substances. This article describes regulations the College of Nurses of Ontario implemented to support safe practice, with a focus on the specific controlled substances elements that were added to education. Findings from an evaluation survey that sought to understand the impact of NPs prescribing controlled substances in Ontario and what NPs needed to support their practice are also discussed. This article will be of interest to regulators who are implementing changes to support initial or ongoing competence of NPs prescribing controlled substances.
