Abstract
Of all the Health Service Circulars (HSCs) to come out this year the one about nurse consultants was the one I was most looking forward to reading (HSC, 1999). Ever since the Government announced its intention to establish nurse consultants there has been a negative and, in some quarters, hostile reaction. However, this initiative is more than just a Government publicity stunt, it is about recognizing expertise in nursing and developing a clinical career ladder.
