Abstract

George Watts Newell, the son of George Garrison and Mabel Edith Newell, was born October 1, 1917 at Wellington, Kansas. He died on November 10, 1979 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Truitt, a son, three daughters, a sister, and nine grandchildren.Newell received his B.S. in 1939 from the University of Missouri at Columbia where he was a member of the Farmhouse fraternity. In 1941, Newell joined the US Army and served in the field artillery until 1945. After World War II, he received his M.S. degree from Purdue University at West Lafayette, Indiana and earned his Ph.D. in 1949 from the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland.Before coming to Stillwater in 1950, Newell was an extension poultry marketing specialist at the University of Missouri. He served as an assistant professor in the Oklahoma State University Poultry Science Department from 1950 to 1953 and as associate .
