Abstract

Allen A. Kurnick died on March 21, 1995 in Portland, Maine. He was born in Kovno, Lithuania, on March 15, 1921. At the age of 17 he and his parent emigrated to the U.S. and settled in Los Angeles, California. He married Nita Bender, who passed away in 1979. After graduation from high school, Allen served as managing partner of the family retail business. For 3 yr, from 1943 to 1946, Kurnick served with the U.S. Army Aviation Engineer Battalion in the Pacific. During this period, he completed an army specialized training program for Russian language at Oregon State College.After returning from the military, he managed the family business for 4 yr and later owned a poultry ranch for 1 yr.
