Abstract

The application of a nonlinear numerical tidal model to the Hauraki Gulf, a serai-enclosed shelf sen on the east coast of the North Island, is described. It has provided a preliminary assessment of tidal elevations and currents, overtides, tidal residual currents, vorticity, energy dissipation rates and the stratification index. The M2 tide closely approximates a standing wave. As the resonant tidal-period along the longitudinal axis of the Gulf is -5.2 hours, significant nonlinear M2:M4 resonant interaction is expected. The model suggests an influence of tidal scouring and mixing on sediment deposition and the intensity of summer water column stratification.
