Abstract

In the present study, a numerical investigation is carried out for helical pile installed in homogeneous and layered soil with a number of geometrical configurations. PLAXIS 3D, a three-dimensional finite-element software, is used to conduct the analyses. The ultimate uplift capacity of the multiple helical pile is determined with varying the soil type and soil layer. In addition, the ultimate uplift capacity of multi-helical piles is evaluated using a detailed parametric study that considers parameters like the spacing between consecutive helical plates (S) and the diameter of the helical plate (Dh) while keeping the diameter of the pile shaft (D) constant. The present study investigates the optimum S/Dh (spacing between helical plates to diameter of helical plate) ratio for multiple helical piles. The investigation shows that the soil layer changes play an important role in the response of ultimate uplift capacities compared to other geometrical variations considered in this study. The presence of a helical blade and its diameter were found to influence uplift capacity significantly. While considering ultimate uplift load capacities, however, the spacing between consecutive helical plates (S) is found to play a relatively less important role compared to other parameters.KeywordsHelical pileNumerical analysisPLAXIS 3DLayered soil(S/Dh) ratio
