Abstract

This paper investigates the nonlinear wave amplification around truncated and vertical, surface-piercing columns with different cross-sections. The wave evolution is evaluated for the stationary condition in the vicinity of a column with circular, square, and rhombus sections subjected to the non-breaking, steep regular waves. Moreover, the harmonics analysis of free surface run-up around the given column is carried out to examine the degree of non-linearity and the contribution of each harmonic which is important in engineering design. The numerical analysis is conducted using a CFD-based numerical wave tank based on the Unsteady Navier-Stokes/VOF model. The numerical results indicate the important contribution of the cross-section shape together with the corner effect on the lateral edge waves and accordingly the non-linear wave field surrounding the given column.
