Abstract

In this study, we used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques to conduct self-propulsion tests to evaluate vessel resistance. We conducted self-propulsion calculations on the Korea Research Institute of Vessels and Ocean Engineering (KRISO) container ship (KCS) at a model scale, directly discretizing the propeller and rudder. We used the overset grid method, which allows the propeller to rotate arbitrarily during the calculation process, and used the volume of fluid (VOF) method for multiphase flow to handle the free surface effect. The accuracy of the computational results was verified by comparison with existing experimental data.
