Abstract

Purpose of this research is to study the effect of rolling motion on single gas bubble rising in stagnant liquid. The effect of rolling motion has been incorporated in the Navier-Stokes equations and simulations have been performed using MPS – MAFL technique in two dimensions. Some experiments have also been conducted to study the phenomenon for validation purposes. The bubble trajectory, rise velocity, aspect ratio and shapes obtained from simulations have been compared with experimental data. The numerical results have been found in good agreement with the experimental findings. Effect of various factors including rolling amplitude, rolling period, rolling phases, distance from the rolling pivot, liquid properties and bubble diameter have been studied on bubble trajectory and rise velocity under the rolling motion conditions. It has been found that effect of rolling conditions is enhanced as the rolling amplitude is increased or rolling period is decreased.
