Abstract

The elliptic systems method (ESM), previously developed by the authors, is applied to the numerical solution of an inverse problem in optical tomography (OT) for the parabolic equation, using an experimental data set. The experimental data set was collected for an unusually limited number of sources and detectors: only a single location for the laser source and seven locations for the detectors. Also, an image of simulated tumors is obtained in the case when the background medium is an anatomically accurate optical map of a female breast. The sensitivity of images to prior knowledge of the background medium is studied. In addition, a convergence result for the ESM is proven. OT has a variety of applications including medical imaging.
