Abstract
The UCL three-dimensional coupled ionosphere — thermosphere model has been modified by the addition of a forcing function for the (2,2), (2,3) and (2,4) semi-diurnal tidal modes near to the lower boundary (80 km). The effects of introducing this forcing are examined at high latitudes and the results are compared with recent EISCAT lower thermosphere wind data from May and July, 1987. The addition of lower boundary forcing with a suitable choice of amplitude and phase is shown to improve the fit of the model to observed data at high latitudes. However, quite variable lower boundary tidal forcing amplitudes and phases are required to match data from different observing periods. This indicates that tides of the lower thermosphere do not uniformly respond to classical Hough functions.
