Abstract
Publisher Summary Current research of aerodynamic instability of bluff body by the discrete vortex method has been surveyed. This chapter focuses on the simulations of vortex-induced excitation, flutter and galloping. It describes the discrete vortex method for the simulation of flow around vibrating section. Assuming that the amplitude of vibration is small, one can use the small perturbation theory in which a section is fixed and the vibrating motion is applied only to the boundary condition. One can easily apply the discrete vortex method to the simulation of flow around a finite vibrating section, because the discrete vortex method is the Lagrangian scheme and no special treatment is needed for taking account of the vibrating motion. By coupling the discrete vortex method with the response analysis of section, one can simulate aerodyanmic instability of freely vibrating section.
